Do you really need this much equipment to get started?

If you're just starting a small home cleaning business, you can get away with a much smaller initial supply kit. You'll really want to focus on the basic tools:

  • Mop and bucket
  • Broom and dustpan
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Sponges and microfiber cloths
  • All-purpose cleaner
  • Glass cleaner
  • Disinfectant spray or wipes
  • Bathroom cleaner (toilet, tub, and tile)
  • Trash bags
  • Gloves
  • Paper towels or reusable rags

You'll know it's time to get more tools as you go when you need them for specialized jobs or to offer add-ons or other upsells.

How much of each supply do you need?

The amount you need will scale with how many cleaners you have and how many homes or offices you clean each month. For a good estimate of how much to order monthly, use our free Home Cleaning Supplies Calculator.

A complete list of cleaning business supplies that you might need

We've divided the list into sections so you can scan by category and customize the checklist above. The exact supplies you need depend on whether you clean homes, offices, or other spaces, and which services or add-ons you offer. For ideas on pricing and offering add-ons (e.g. inside oven, inside fridge, carpet cleaning), see our blog post on cleaning add-ons.

1. Tools & Equipment

Mop and bucket (wet, dry, microfiber with wringer)

Essential for wet mopping and damp-mopping floors. Options include traditional string mops, flat mops, microfiber mops, and buckets with wringers. Use microfiber systems for streak-free hard floors; keep a wet mop for deep cleans and a dry or damp mop for maintenance. Needed for almost every residential and commercial job.

Broom & dustpan (whisk broom, snap-on dustpan)

For sweeping hard floors and tight corners. A whisk broom is handy for small areas and edges; a snap-on or clip dustpan keeps cleanup quick. Use a soft-bristle broom on finished floors to avoid scratches. Standard for homes and offices.

Lobby broom / push broom

Wide push brooms (lobby brooms) cover large areas fast. Ideal for entryways, garages, warehouses, and commercial spaces. Choose bristle stiffness based on surface (softer for finished floors, stiffer for concrete or outdoors). More common for commercial and large spaces.

Vacuum cleaner (upright, multi-surface, HEPA options)

Core tool for carpets and area rugs and for quick dust pickup on hard floors. Upright vacuums suit carpet-heavy homes; canister or stick vacs are versatile for mixed surfaces. HEPA filters help with allergies and post-construction. Multi-surface or dedicated carpet settings improve results. Essential for residential; commercial jobs may use backpack or commercial uprights.

Scrub brushes (various sizes, ergonomic, no-scratch, detail brushes)

For scrubbing grout, tubs, tile, and stuck-on dirt. Keep a range of sizes: large for floors and tubs, small and detail brushes for grout and corners. Ergonomic handles reduce fatigue; no-scratch bristles protect delicate surfaces. Use on deep cleans, move-in/out, and bathroom or kitchen focus jobs.

Sponges (non-scratch, multi-shape)

Multi-purpose for wiping, light scrubbing, and applying cleaners. Non-scratch sponges are safe on most surfaces; different shapes (e.g. wedge, round) suit corners and fixtures. Replace regularly to avoid cross-contamination. Standard for kitchens and bathrooms.

Scrubbers (handheld, power, spinning pads)

Handheld scrubbers, power scrubbers, or spinning pads speed up tough jobs. Use for grout, shower doors, and heavily soiled areas. Power options save time on large or commercial jobs; handheld is fine for typical homes.

Dusters (short, long, extendable, microfiber)

For ceilings, fans, blinds, and high corners. Short dusters are quick for shelves; extendable or long-handled dusters reach above without ladders. Microfiber heads trap dust instead of spreading it. Use on every clean; extendable is especially useful for tall ceilings and fans.

Squeegees & T-bars (with extension poles)

Squeegees and T-bars clear water and cleaner from glass and smooth floors. Use after cleaning shower doors and windows to prevent streaks and water spots. Extension poles help with high windows. Important for streak-free glass and shower enclosures.

Toothbrush/mini grout brush

Small brushes or old toothbrushes get into grout lines, faucet crevices, and tight spots. Inexpensive and disposable or dedicated to harsh chemicals. Handy for deep bathroom and kitchen cleans and move-in/out.

Upholstery or carpet brush

Soft-bristle or upholstery attachments for vacuuming or brushing furniture and fabric. Use before or after vacuuming to lift dust and pet hair. Needed when you offer upholstery or general dusting as part of the service.

Bucket or caddy for carrying supplies

A bucket or caddy keeps sprays, cloths, and tools together and makes it easy to move from room to room. Reduces trips back to the supply bag. Useful for every type of job.

Storage bins / containers for chemicals and cloths

Containers for storing chemicals and cloths at home or in the van. Keep products labeled and separated; use separate bins for clean vs. dirty cloths. Helps with organization and safety.

Laundry bag for old rags

A dedicated bag for used rags and mop heads keeps dirty laundry separate from clean supplies and protects the rest of your gear. Use whenever you rely on reusable cloths.

Steam cleaner (floor/upholstery, commercial-grade)

Steam cleans and sanitizes without chemicals. Options include handheld units for small areas and larger floor or upholstery models. Good for clients who want green cleaning or sanitizing. Useful for deep cleans and add-on services.

Floor scrubber, buffer, polisher (commercial)

Commercial floor scrubbers and buffers are for large hard-floor areas (offices, retail, schools). Not typical for residential; consider for commercial or large property contracts.

Carpet cleaning machine / extractor

Carpet extractors and cleaning machines do deep carpet cleaning. Rent or own depending on volume. Needed if you offer carpet cleaning as a service or add-on.

Pressure washer (for exterior/commercial jobs)

For exterior surfaces: siding, driveways, patios, and decks. Use with appropriate nozzles and distance to avoid damage. Common for exterior or commercial add-ons.
